CHAPTER 21

Geometry

PERIMETER

Perimeter is the measure of length around the exterior of a shape. For example, to find the perimeter of a rectangle, add up the lengths of all four sides.

If you need to find the perimeter of an irregular shape, you may need to subtract to find missing values. Try an example:

What is the perimeter of the shape below?

A) 11

B) 13

C) 18

D) 20

The correct answer is C. As you can see, two of the lengths are not marked. You will need to find them by subtracting from the values of parallel sides. The vertical piece on the right side plus the vertical piece with length 2 on the right side must equal the 5 on the left side. The missing value must equal 3. The horizontal piece plus the horizontal piece at the top with length 2 must add up to the 4 at the bottom. The missing value must equal 2. The perimeter is 5 + 2 + 3 + 2 + 2 + 4 = 18.
